April: Month of the Military Child at Columbus Air Force Base

Each April, the U.S. Department of Defense recognizes more than 1.6 million children who navigate the unique challenges of military life. Columbus Air Force Base (CAFB) is honored to celebrate these resilient young heroes with a month full of special events and activities.

Supporting Military Children at CAFB

CAFB’s Youth Programs provide care, enrichment, and development opportunities for children from infancy through 18 years old at two key facilities: the Child Development Center (CDC) and the Youth Center.

The Child Development Center (CDC) is an accredited Early Learning Center recognized by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Offering high-quality full-day and part-time programs for children aged six weeks to five years, the CDC helps build a strong developmental foundation to prepare young learners for Kindergarten and beyond.

The Youth Center serves children and teens ages 5-18, providing programs that foster leadership, achievement, and personal growth. Through partnerships with the United States Air Force Programs, Boys and Girls Club of America, and National 4-H Club Programs, the Youth Center delivers engaging activities that empower young individuals to thrive.

Youth Sports at CAFB

The Youth Sports Program at CAFB offers a variety of team sports, including soccer, t-ball, coach pitch, flag football, and basketball. As a nationally accredited Better Sports for Kids Program Provider through the National Alliance for Sports, this program ensures high-quality, enriching athletic experiences for all participants.

Celebrating the Month of the Military Child

To honor military children and their families, Youth Programs is partnering with FSS facilities such as Outdoor Recreation and the CAFB Library to host family-friendly activities throughout April. These events bring military families together for fun, connection, and recognition of their unique experiences.

One of the most significant observances of the month is Purple Up Day, a special recognition day observed on 23 April. On this day, people are encouraged to wear purple—a color that represents all branches of the military—as a show of support for military children. Purple Up Day raises awareness of the unique challenges these children face, such as frequent relocations, deployments, and long separations from their loved ones. It is also a time to acknowledge their resilience and strength, as well as their vital role in the military community.
